Ravan Vadh – A Tradition of Dasara

On the day of Dussehra / Dasara, Lord Sri Rama killed demon king Ravana, who is also called Dashakanta.

To commemorate the defeat of Ravana and the victory of good over evil, people started celebrating ‘Dush-hara’ (the defeat of Dashakanta – Ravana).

In the evening of Dasara, Ravana Vadh is ceebrated throughout India.

Large effigies of Ravana is burned. For this crackers are used.

In 2008, during the festival of Durga Navrathri, on 7th October, Tuesday, Goddess Sri Durga Devi is worshipped.

This day is very important as a part of the navratri celebrations in Sri Kanaka Durga Temple in Vijayawada.

Durga Ashtami is celebrated on this day.
