Dhanteras – The Most Prosperous Occasion During Diwali Festival

As per the Hindu tradition, Dhanteras is the most auspicious and prosperous occasion during the four-day festival – Diwali.

Dhanteras is celebrated on Aswayuja Krishna Triodasi. Hence it is also called as Dhana Trayodashi.
It is believed that purchasing any new things such as home appliances or jewelry is very prosperous on this day.

On this day, lighting of diyas is the ritual and custom.

In 2008, Dhanteras falls on 26th October, Sunday.

On Dhanteras, Dhanwantari Jayanthi is also celebrated.

Ravan Vadh – A Tradition of Dasara

On the day of Dussehra / Dasara, Lord Sri Rama killed demon king Ravana, who is also called Dashakanta.

To commemorate the defeat of Ravana and the victory of good over evil, people started celebrating ‘Dush-hara’ (the defeat of Dashakanta – Ravana).

In the evening of Dasara, Ravana Vadh is ceebrated throughout India.

Large effigies of Ravana is burned. For this crackers are used.

Durga Devi Immersion – Concluding Event of Durga Navratri

Durga Nimajjan also called as Visarjan is the last and concluding event of Durga Navarathri.

In some places it is performed on Dussehra / Vijaya Dashami / Dasara / Dassara.

In 2008, it is celebrated on 9th October, Thursday or 10th October, Friday.

The day of this event may depend on the regional traditions of a place.

On the same day, devotees burn the giant effigies of Ravana

Vijaya Dashami 2009

In 2009, Vijaya Dashami is celebrated on September 26. It is celebrated to commemorate the victory of good over evil. On this day, Mother Goddess Shakti demolished bufello demon Mahishasura.

And, Lord Sri Rama killed demon king Ravanasura and returned to his kingdon Ayodhya where his people celebrated the festival of success (Vijaya Dashami). On the day of Vijaya Dashami, Ravanasura, who is also called Dashakanta was killed, to commemorate his defeat this festival is also called as ‘Dussehra’ / Dasara / Dassara.

‘Ravanasura Vadha’ – a tradition of blasting the idol of Ravana is performed.
