Significance of Akha Trij – Akshay Tritiya Festival in Jainism

April 3, 2009 · 1 Comment

Akha Trij or Akshay Tritiiya is an auspicious occasion in Jainism as well. Jain devotees who observe the fasting on alternate day through out the year conclude their Tapasya (observance of fasting) on Akshay Tritiya.

Connection of Akshay Tritiya with Jainism:
As per the Jain religion, Akshay Tritiya is one of the most celebrated festivals. It is said that the first Jain Tirthankar, Lord Shri Rishab Dev Ji, also known as Adinath Ji, concluded his year-long fast (Varshi Tap) on Akshaya Tritiya day and he did his ‘Parana’ with sugarcane juice (Ikshu Ras).

Along with the great Varshi Tap of Rishab Dev, Jain scriptures also mentioned the names of Hastinapura’s King, Som Prabha and his younger brother, Sreyans Kumar. Some texts say that Som Prabha and Sreyansh Kumar are Rishab Dev’s great grand sons.

When Lord Rishab Dev broke his year-long fast, a rain of jewels and flowers fallen and scintillating climate surrounded the atmosphere. That was the Akshaya Tritiya day.

Because of the above reason, Jains consider the day of Akshaya Tritiya as the concluding day of their Varshi Tap. Jains conclude their Varshi Tap in one of the Jain pilgrimage centres, such as Hastinapur, Palitana or Sammet Shikhar Ji.
